The physical exam for IME is an essential component of the immigration process. What is a physical exam?
A physical exam is a routine checkup that evaluates your overall health and wellbeing. During a physical exam for IME, a panel physician will assess your health status and identify any medical conditions that could affect your admissibility to Canada.
Who needs an IME?
Anyone who’s applying for permanent residency in Canada, regardless of age, must undergo an IME. Additionally, those who will be working in certain occupations or coming from certain countries may also need to undergo an IME.
Who conducts the IME?
The IME is conducted by a panel physician who’s been designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Panel physicians are licensed medical practitioners who have been authorized by IRCC to conduct medical examinations for immigration purposes.
What happens during the physical exam for IME?
During the physical exam for IME, the panel physician will check for any physical abnormalities or medical conditions that could affect your admissibility to Canada. They will conduct a thorough physical examination, which includes checking your eyes, ears, nose, throat, heart, lungs, abdomen, extremities, and skin.
Other components of the immigration medical exam
In addition to the physical exam, the IME also includes urine and blood tests and a chest x-ray. These tests are used to screen for tuberculosis, syphilis, HIV, and other medical conditions that could affect your admissibility to Canada.
What happens after your immigration medical exam?
Once the physical exam and other components of the IME are completed, the panel physician will submit the results to IRCC. Thenafter, IRCC will make a decision on your admissibility to Canada based on the results of your IME and other factors, such as your criminal and immigration history.
