Role of a panel physician explained by IME Clinic Inc.
Updated on May 4th, 2023
Panel Physicians perform Immigration Medical Exam, but do not make decisions on admissibility! However, Registered panel physician plays an important part in the immigration process and help ensure the health and safety of Canadians.
If you have an upcoming Immigration Medical Exam, your appointment will be with a panel physician. They are medical doctors who are specially authorized to perform Immigration Medical Exams. As well, they complete forms and referrals, and use eMedical. Importantly, only panel physicians approved by IRCC can perform an Immigration Medical Exam.
What do they do during the exam?
First, the doctor will ask questions about your medical history. Then, they will perform a physical examination. Specifically, the doctor will check your general health by looking at your weight, skin, blood pressure, etc. Additionally, you can find more information on the physical exam here.
Next, the doctor will refer you for special tests, that includes chest x-rays and bloodwork.
What rules must the Panel Physician follow?
Firstly, they are required to keep up to date with all the latest information about immigration and IMEs.
As well, the doctor is responsible for submitting all records for your application to eMedical.
Finally, they must report any abnormal findings to the patient. If necessary, they will refer them to a specialist.
Do they determine whether you are medically admissible to come to Canada?
Remember, the panel physician is not allowed to make decisions on medical inadmissibility. Thus, the IRCC makes these decisions. Learn more here.
